Four Brockton Men Give Back to Their Community in Camp Vohokase Hometown Visit
December 23, 2022

With colder weather comes warm hearts! Camp Vohokase — The Light Foundation’s flagship leadership program — is doing their part to give back to its community. The holiday season is just around the corner, and we believe it’s important that the young men of the Vohokase Cultural Leadership Program make an impact in their area. A group of young men from Brockton, Massachusetts, did just that this past weekend!

The most recent group of young men taking part in the Vohokase Cultural Leadership Program are from Brockton, Massachusetts. Brockton High School comprises over 4,000 students and we selected three to be a part of the Camp Vohokase Program last Spring. Brockton High Freshmen Jarred Mighty, Milton Monterio, and Gaethan Sinsaire all serve as the sophomore class in the program. Rajon Burkes attends Cardinal Spellman, a private school in Brockton, and he is also a part of the sophomore class.

This hometown visit included a community service effort at Bethel Tabernacle Pentecostal in Dorchester. The young men helped break down substantial amounts of cardboard boxes from the food given to those in need in the community. The weekend before Thanksgiving, the church provided turkeys and many other goods to over 300 families!

The Camp Vohokase youth serving Brockton appreciate Light Foundation employee, Mauryanne Remondini. She serves her community endlessly through food drives such as the one these Brockton youths took part in this past weekend. Her generosity through serving her community is a great example for these young men to witness.

Community Service is one of the best aspects of the hometown visits since it’s such a rewarding feeling to help make a difference. We also offer them with a fun bonding activity too — this time it was a trip to the Southwick Zoo! And it definitely makes the top of our list for most fun things to do in Massachusetts. We owe a huge thank you to our long time friend, Rowland Gravel, and partners at the facility for setting up a fun and educational opportunity for these four young men to experience. It’s something they will harp about to the other students when it comes time for the eight-day leadership camp in the summer!

Next up is a visit with the Camp Vohokase class from Darke County – stay tuned!
