Leading, Laughing, and Giving Back: A Day with Camp Vohokase in Laconia, NH
October 20, 2026

Leadership is not always learned in a classroom. It is built through everyday experiences: helping others, encouraging teammates, working through challenges, and learning from setbacks. During our recent visit with the Camp Vohokase campers in Laconia, New Hampshire, the young men had plenty of opportunities to put those lessons into practice. From serving families in need to competing together and tackling an escape room challenge, the day was filled with opportunities to grow, connect, and lead by example.

We kicked off the morning with breakfast at Tilt’n Diner, where everyone had a chance to connect and prepare for the day ahead. After breakfast, we headed to Walmart to gather supplies for the local Salvation Army. The campers helped select diapers, baby wipes, fresh produce, and a few sweet treats to support families in the community. They worked together to compare prices, organize their shopping, and consider what families might need most. It was a great reminder that leadership starts with looking beyond yourself and finding ways to make a difference in the lives of others.

With the donations delivered, it was time for some friendly competition at Altitude Trampoline Park. The campers jumped into dodgeball matches and dunk competitions, bringing plenty of energy and enthusiasm. Whether they were communicating on the court or cheering each other on, the young men showed that teamwork and sportsmanship matter just as much as winning.

After lunch at Raising Cane’s, we headed to Chucksters for go-karting. The races brought out everyone’s competitive side while giving the campers another opportunity to practice self-control, follow the rules, and stay aware of those around them. Even in the middle of the competition, racing safely and respecting others remained part of the experience.

Next up was Escape Room Concord, where the group took on the Dragon’s Chamber. The challenge required patience, communication, and teamwork as the campers searched for clues and worked to solve the puzzles before time ran out. Some stepped up to organize the group, while others spotted details that helped move the team forward. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it out in time! Although the dragon got the better of us, the experience provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on what worked, what could have gone better, and how the team could approach the challenge differently next time. Learning to work through setbacks without placing blame is an important part of becoming a stronger leader, and this challenge gave the campers a chance to put that lesson into practice.

We kept the momentum going at FunSpot, the world’s largest arcade, where the campers enjoyed racing games, Skee-Ball, and a friendly competition to collect tickets. After the escape room setback, it was great to see everyone having fun, celebrating each other’s successes, and enjoying time together. The stop was a reminder that resilience also means being able to reset, keep a positive attitude, and move forward as a team.

We wrapped up the day at Cactus Jack’s, sharing a meal and reflecting on the experiences that made the visit special. From serving the community to navigating challenges together, the campers had plenty to talk about. Taking time to recognize individual contributions and celebrate shared experiences helped bring the day’s lessons full circle.

Our time in Laconia was a reminder that leadership can be practiced anywhere. Whether serving families through the Salvation Army, encouraging a teammate during a competition, or working through a difficult challenge, the young men had opportunities to demonstrate the values at the heart of Camp Vohokase.

As the campers continue their leadership journey, we hope they carry these lessons with them: lead by serving others, communicate and work together, compete with character, and learn from every setback. Thank you to our Laconia campers for bringing their energy, teamwork, and positive attitudes to the day. We’re proud of the growth they continue to show and look forward to our next visit. And, of course, the Dragon’s Chamber rematch is still on the table!
