Darke County, OH — The LIGHT Project, an outdoor literacy program offered through the Light Foundation’s Leadership Academy, co-founded by Matt and Susie Light, hosted an exciting Family Fun Day for first graders across Darke County. Local author Lisa Hildebrand of Tipp City, Ohio, read her popular children’s book Hatching Snappers,
illustrated by Parker Burhman, who is color blind. Lisa introduced students to basic sign language, adding a special hands-on element to the outdoor event.
Students also participated in a creative drawing activity and a scavenger hunt, making for a day full of learning, exploration, and fun. Special thanks to Melinda Quinn, Franklin Monroe first-grade teacher, for helping make the day a success and guiding students through the activities too.
Lisa Hildebrand shared her excitement about the event: “It was such a joy to meet these curious young learners and share my love of stories and sign language with them. Seeing their creativity and energy during the activities was truly inspiring.”
The LIGHT Project is offered to first graders in all school districts in Darke County, with six of the seven districts currently choosing to participate. The program is included in the curriculum of 26 classrooms and blends STEM and literacy-based learning with hands-on, outdoor activities. Students earn stars for participation, and once they reach 50 stars, they are rewarded with a special night out at Chenoweth Trails, combining recognition with outdoor adventure.
Family Fun Days are held once a month, giving students and their families the opportunity to enjoy engaging outdoor literacy experiences. Families are encouraged to participate, reinforcing learning at home while enjoying fun activities like hiking, scavenger hunts, drawing exercises, and more.
The LIGHT Project is actively seeking sponsors to support classrooms and expand its reach. With over 500 students in Ohio and 80 students in Rhode Island participating annually, the program is making a meaningful impact on young readers and their families.
The next Family Fun Day will take place on March 7 during the Darke County Parks Maple Walk. First graders and their families are welcome to join for another exciting day of outdoor learning, literacy, and fun.
