In an effort to replicate the goals of Camp Vohokase on a larger scale, more localized to Mass., the foundation piloted a Leadership Conference in 2016 at Franklin High School. Approximately 70 students from Foxboro, Franklin, Bellingham and Beacon Academy gathered for an all-day presentation by Matt and industry leaders with, “Don’t Hate. Negotiate!” being the undertone of the event.
In our second year, we partnered up with Bridgewater State University to host 50 underserved students each from Brockton, Fall River, and New Bedford for a day of leadership training with the focus being on communication and “Bridging the Gap Between What You Do and What You Say.” Various icebreakers, panel discussions and leadership exercises were used to enforce the power of social media, personal networking and career building.
This newfound partnership with Bridgewater State is a three-year conference series with yearlong post-conference work for the students to complete. The students enter at the leadership conference as sophomores in high school and continue participation until senior year when they serve as mentors for the incoming class.
We’ve already begun planning our 4th annual leadership conference with BSU. Having now impacted 270 students over the past few years, we’re excited to see how we can push the envelope and help even more young people succeed within their communities.
